Leaders Expect Accord on Transportation and Tourism in BIMSTEC Summ

Leaders of the seven countries comprising Bangladesh-India-Myanmar-Sri Lanka-Thailand Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) will meet in Bangkok at the end of this week and are expected to agree on closer links in transport and tourism, the Thai Foreign Ministry said.

Ramkishen Rajan, from the University of Adelaide’s School of Economics, said “the rise of China and India will help create prosperity in other countries throughout the region, especially in ASEAN, which is well placed to reap the benefits of being the de facto hub among China, India and Japan.”

First Euro-Mediterranean Trade Ministerial (29 May)

On 29 May the first Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Meeting took place. The objective of this meeting was to reinvigorate the trade dimension of the Barcelona process. In light of the objective to establish the Euro-Mediterranean Free Trade Area, the ministers concluded that progress has been made, but that the efforts to reinforce the economic and commercial chapters of the partnership should be intensified. The ministers also discussed multilateral trade matters.

En el Mercosur se ha abierto un proceso negociador que conducirá a lo que ya se llama Ouro Preto II. Se trata de la próxima cumbre por realizarse en diciembre en la misma ciudad de Mina Gerais, donde hace 10 años concluyeron los acuerdos sobre la unión aduanera y se firmó el Protocolo de Ouro Preto, que estableció la estructura institucional del Mercosur. Es una estructura que luego se amplió con las funciones técnicas atribuidas a la secretaría, con la creación de la figura del presidente del Comité de Representantes y con el Tribunal Permanente de Revisión a instalarse en Asunción.
