Development co-operation: United Kingdom
In the UK the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is
the Government department responsible for overseas relations and
foreign affairs.
For further information go to the Foreign
and Commonwealth Office website. The site also discusses
the key
issues in foreign policy.
The Department
for International Development (DFID) formerly was the aid wing
of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. It is now a separate
government department responsible for promoting development and the
reduction of poverty.
The policy of the UK on international development
was set out in the White
Paper on International Development of November 1997.
Recently a second
White Paper has been published, under the title: eliminating
world poverty: making globalisation work for the poor.
The amount and distribution of official
development assistance of the United Kingdom in the period 1998-99
can be found at the DAC
web-site.
