The interdependence that has emerged between
the EU and developing countries requires that each party is
sensitive to the needs of the other. The EU-LDC Network
recognises that such sensitivity can best be developed through
constructive and informed dialogue. Further, the dialogue
needed is not confined to official circles but, rather, should
also engage the escalating activities of civil society.
Accordingly, the role that the EU-LDC Network seeks to perform
is to provide a mechanism for the exchange of views and
information as well as dialogue among the wide range of
parties interested in economic relations between Europe and
developing countries.
The main objective of the EU-LDC
Network is:
To promote the development of economic
co-operation, based on justice and equality and orientated
towards achieving sustainable economic growth and combating
poverty, between the European Union and its Member Sates (EU)
on the one hand, and the less developed countries (LDC) with
which the member states maintain developmental relations on
the other hand.
The purpose of the Network, to achieve
the above objective, is:
-
To widen the debate on EU-LDC relations by
researchers, policy makers, civil society representatives
and other interested parties.
-
To encourage research and contribute to
agenda building.
-
To help design effective policies for
dealing with problems of globalisation, trade, poverty and
aid.
The means by which the Network proposes to
achieve its objective and purpose are:
Thematic information: endeavouring to
make it possible for interested parties to gain access to
information and research on current and future issues in the
economic relationships between the EU and developing
countries.
Institutional information: endeavouring
to make it possible for interested parties to gain access to
information about the EU organisation, EU policy frameworks
and EU policy documents important for economic relationships
between developing countries on the one hand and the Member
States and the EU on the other.
Analysis: stimulating the analysis of
information and research results so as to enhance the
possibilities of assessing the potential consequences that
policy choices by the EU and developing countries could have
for mutual trade, investment and development relations, and
the way in which these might impact economic growth, the
combating of poverty and social injustice, particularly in
developing countries.
Discussion: initiating dialogue and
debate on issues relevant to the relationship between the EU
and developing countries for the purpose of bringing about an
exchange of opinions, knowledge and insights between
researchers, policy consultants, policy-makers, social
organisations and other interested parties.
